Cowlitz Sheriff Office introduces their newest K9 to the community....(Photo) (Photo) - 11/13/17

Cowlitz County, WA: The Cowlitz County Sheriff's Office has a new K9 team in service; Deputy Sheriff Brady Spaulding and his K9 partner "Icarus".

Icarus is a 2-1/2 year old German Shepherd from the Czech Republic. He was purchased on June 8th, 2017, from Adlerhorst International in Riverside, CA. Deputy Spaulding and a master K9 trainer from Pierce County Sheriff's Office selected Icarus after evaluating over 15 dogs.

Deputy Spaulding and Icarus have completed over 400 hours of training. They are a certified Patrol K9 team having passing both the WAC (Washington Administrative Code) and WSPCA (Washington State Police Canine Association) certification standards. Training was conducted by the Pierce County Sheriff's Office. As a State Certified Patrol K9 team they required to maintain 16 hours of training every month, and to re-certify in both the WAC and WSPCA standards every two years. The K9 training includes obedience, tracking, area & building searches, agitation/control work, evidence searches and other scenario based trainings. Annual maintenance training reflects the requirements for both state certification standards.

Like previous Cowlitz Sheriff K9 teams they are available for calls for service for all law enforcement agencies in Cowlitz County as well as other agencies in southwest Washington and northwest Oregon.
They are currently assigned to the Cowlitz Sheriff's Office Patrol Division and are used for the following:

- Tracking and/or apprehension of suspects
- Building & area searches
- Evidence searches
- Search and Rescue
- Deputy Protection.

Sheriff Mark Nelson said, "We are thrilled to have Deputy Spaulding and Icarus on board. Their training has been long and hard, but now they are here, ready to serve the citizens of Cowlitz County. Our thanks to those who have assisted us through their kind donations, including the Longview-Kelso Kiwanis and other private donations."
