CAFM is canceling its September 12 farmers’ markets in Corvallis and Albany.

The market association had set a standard of 150 AQI (Air Quality Index) for determining if farmers’ markets would open. It isn’t a high bar, yet there is now little chance that it could be achieved.

After an initial press release saying we’d decide by Friday at 3 pm, the National Weather Service issued an alert saying smoke will persist through at least noon Monday. That message was renewed Friday morning.

“We have to think about all dimensions of community health, not just our historic focus on nutrition,” said Market Director Rebecca Landis. “Let’s show our lungs some love as well.”

CAFM canceled the Wednesday market for Sept. 9. That was only the second cancellation CAFM has made since 1995. Today’s cancellation is the third time.

Some vendors have needed to evacuate their farms and homes. Farms have struggled to pick anything while limiting their exposure to unhealthy conditions.

CAFM recommends using a mask (N95 or KN95) designed for smoke and particulates – not just to reduce/prevent transmission of Covid 19.

News will be shared on LocallyGrown.org, its three Facebook pages and other social media outlets. CAFM uses the FlashAlert system to notify media.
