SHERIFF PIXLEY AWARDS COMMENDATIONS TO TROOPERS AND CITIZEN

Sheriff Pixley presented Oregon State Police Sgt. Chad Drew, Trooper Chris Cowen, Trooper Grace Davey and Mr. Jay White awards for their heroic actions during the officer involved shooting at Grumpy’s Towing on March 31st. On October 12, 2022, Sheriff Pixley spoke in front of the Board of County Commissioner’s meeting to discuss the reasons why he was recognizing the Troopers and Citizen.

Sheriff Pixley awarded Sgt. Chad Drew the Medal of Valor, saying “That day, without even knowing me, you responded to my call for help without hesitation. While everyone was cautiously going through the main garage, all you said was three words, “push, push, push”. Once you rounded the corner with your rifle and realized the suspect was still shooting at me … you engaged the suspect and ultimately helped put an end to this dangerous situation”, said Sheriff Pixley.

Sheriff Pixley awarded Trooper Chris Cowen the Medal of Meritorious Service. “Without you being available for Jay’s phone call that morning and your quick actions, I really believe more people would have been hurt or killed. You and I have known each other for a long time and I appreciate you being there. You chose to run towards the gunfire as well”, said Sheriff Pixley.

Sheriff Pixley awarded Trooper Grace Davey the Medal of Meritorious Service, saying that it was “her third day riding solo in a car by herself. Despite this being her third day on solo patrol, she still chose to run towards the gunfire instead of away from it. And she handled this situation with valor, bravery and strength.  In a moment of chaos, her calmness allowed me to draw upon her strength to keep myself calm and focused.”

Sheriff Pixley awarded Mr. Jay White the Distinguished Citizens Award. “When Jay first encountered the suspect, he knew that the suspect was wanted from conversations he’d had with Trooper Cowen. So he took steps to immediate notify the police, at great risk to himself. I firmly believe that, if not for Mr. White’s fast actions on that morning, additional people would have been hurt or killed,” said Sheriff Pixley

Sheriff Pixley said, “I was thrilled to recognize these heroes in our community with special awards for bravery.  They ran towards danger when the bullets were flying and put their lives on the line to protect the citizens of Columbia County.  I am honored to not only work alongside such amazing people, but also to be able to call them my friends.”
