CLARKSTON, WA – Clarkston DECA members - Jacey Hernandez, Katie Kaufman, and Owen Boreson and Clarkston High School DECA is driven to keep the members of our community safe on the road. The campaign against texting and driving, STOP “It Can Wait”, to promote safe and non-distracted driving will occur during the month of October.
The “It Can Wait” campaign is centered on community involvement and creating awareness, specifically for the Lewiston- Clarkston Valley. Informational booths will be hosted during lunch and advisories where students will have the opportunity to sign pledges and receive thumb rings and giveaways. Friday October 11th a distracted driving boxcar demonstration where one of the runners will be blindfolded, will be held on the football field during halftime of the Bantam’s Varsity Homecoming Football Game. The average time to send a text is 4.6 seconds, which at 55mph, is equivalent to the length of a football field. The STOP “It Can Wait” campaign’s goal is to inform members of our community what the risks of distracted driving are and how fatal that decision can be. The coordinators have already attended Inland Cellular open house to receive pledges to not text and drive. We have also attended the Palouse Driving Summit conference to learn what Washington State is doing to protect the safety of the community and to learn more about distracted driving.
