***UPDATED INFORMATION, 3/12/2018 1:16pm PHOTO ADDED**
I neglected to mention in the last press release that there was a dog in the white Subaru. The dog was transferred to a concerned resident at the scene and at the time of the collision did not seem to be suffering serious injuries. Today the dog was to be reunited with its family.

***UPDATED INFORMATION, 3/12/2018, 12:40 PM****

The following persons have been identified as involved parties in this collision incident:

Vehicle #1 - 1993 Subaru Legacy Sedan
Driver - SCHMID, Joshua J. Age 21. Vancouver resident. Schmid died at the scene of the collision;
Passenger - LAIRD, McKenzie K. Age 21. Vancouver resident. Laird suffered serious injury as a result of this collision.

Vehicle #2 - 2008 Kia Spectra Sedan
Driver - HARTMAN, Zachary A. Age 23. Washougal resident. Hartman suffered serious injury as a result of this collision.

To clarify the previous statement below, Schmid was operating his Subaru northbound on Washougal River Road, and Hartman was operating his Kia Spectra southbound on the same roadway. Washougal River Road is a winding, two-lane roadway that follows a river by the same name. Most of the length of this roadway is marked for No Passing, by double solid yellow center lines. Scene evidence indicates that the collision occurred in the southbound lane of the roadway, in a curve. Witnesses provided statements to CCSO Traffic Detectives that Schmid was passing other northbound cars prior to the collision. Any possible additional contributing factors are being investigated at this time by the CCSO Traffic Unit.

On 3/11/2018 at 8:15pm, EMS Personnel and CCSO Deputies were dispatched to a two vehicle collision in the 36500 block of NE Washougal River Road. Upon arrival, EMS Personnel encountered heavily damaged vehicles and 3 persons with multiple injuries requiring extrication. Scene evidence and witness statements revealed that a white Subaru sedan was traveling northbound on Washougal River Road, passing cars and traveling over the centerline of the roadway when it met a southbound Kia Sedan and the two collided head-on. The collision occurred in the southbound lane of travel. The driver of the white Subaru was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Kia and a passenger in the Subaru were transported to an area hospital with serious injuries. No other occupants were involved in the collision.

The collision scene required extensive investigation by the CCSO Traffic Unit and the roadway was closed until 1:30 the following morning. The collision resulted in damage to a power pole and subsequent loss of power to a single resident on the roadway. The roadway is now open for normal traffic.

No names or other identifying information is being released at this time pending notification of next of kin. Additional details will be made available as soon as possible. The investigation is continuing.
