CCHM To Open Prohibition And Brewing Exhibit (Photo) -12/19/19
Vancouver, Wash. – Clark County Historical Museum will hold a public reception for its newest exhibit, “History A-Brewin’,” at 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 17. The first 20 guests to arrive will receive a 32-ounce growler and a gift card toward a fill from Trap Door Brewing. An after-party will follow at 7:30 p.m. at UnderBar, 1701 1/2 Broadway Street in Vancouver.
“Clark County’s story of brewing, distilling, temperance, and prohibition started long ago,” said CCHM Executive Director Brad Richardson. “Today, local brewers, distillers, and winemakers have turned to a craft and artisan style that creates beverages of unparalleled quality. However, the road for these industries has not always been paved with Hop Gold.”
In commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the 18th Amendment, “History A-Brewin’” will showcase the history of beer, liquor, and prohibition in Clark County through interpretative panels, historical objects, interactive stations, and county-wide partnerships.
The exhibit will explore brewing in the time of the Hudson’s Bay Company and Vancouver Barracks; the era of prohibition; the Women’s Christian Temperance Union; the establishment and growth of Great Western Malting; and the contemporary brewing scene in Clark County.
Objects representing this history will accompany these narratives. Key items include the cap of a prohibition-era moonshine still, found under a porch in Vancouver’s Rosemere neighborhood; ephemera from Lucky Lager and Star breweries; items related to 1920s political figures in Clark County; and relics of prohibition-era vices.
Visitors can also test their brewing senses at an interactive smelling station, which will feature a variety of regional hops and malts.
“History A-Brewin’” will be open through 2023. This exhibit is sponsored by Great Western Malting, Bader Beer and Wine Supply, Barlow’s Public House, and the many “99 Bottles” supporters.
General admission for the opening reception is $5; seniors and students are $4; children under 18 are $3; and the evening is free with a CCHM membership.
