An Evening With The Children's Home Society Of WA - Building Community For Clark County Children, Youth, & Families (Photo) - 05/30/18
Vancouver, WA – On Thursday, June 7, the Clark County Historical Museum (CCHM) will be hosting their next First Thursday Speaker Series event, which will focus on the Children’s Home Society of Washington's beginnings, their current mission, and on the importance of their Triple Point group to our area's LGBTQ youth. General admission is $5.00, seniors and students are $4.00, children under 18 are $3.00, and the evening is FREE with a CCHM membership. Doors open at 5:00pm, the event begins at 7:00 pm. The museum encourages attendees to get there early, as it is first-come, first-served seating.
According to Stephen Herndon with the Society’s Triple Point program, “The Children’s Home Society of Washington was founded in Seattle in 1896. Although our direction has changed over the years, we continue to serve communities all over the state with various programs and counseling services. I invite everyone to join Andrew Tucker our Vancouver Community Director and myself for a fascinating journey from our beginnings to our current areas of expertise.”
Mr. Herndon went on to say, “Andrew will take us through the very beginning, why we were founded, and share the incredible work we are currently doing for the families and children we serve in our communities. Then, I will explain the importance of one of our most valued program, Triple Point. This group serves LGBTQ youth 11 - 18 years of age through weekly support groups, as well as advocacy work in our schools.”
CCHM is the County's memory keepers, and we believe that history is made by everyone, every day. This means we strive to be inclusive across all aspects of our collections, programming, events, and exhibits to make history accessible and identifiable by all residents.
With this mind, James William Kice, the museum’s Operations and Collections Manager said, “I feel it’s vital for us to highlight our local LGBTQ history because, although we are present in this community, our local history and contributions are under recognized. The museum is focusing on collecting items and stories that represent the entire population and it’s diversity. I look forward to expanding our holdings of these materials as a way to preserve the histories of peoples who’s presence has had a major impact on my life and that of others.”
The Children’s Home Society of Washington will also have a few special item on display for this night only. CCHM is honored to be able to share these thoroughly amazing Clark County stories with our community.
