Vancouver, Wash. – Vancouver Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services has named youth soccer coach Marc Pongon the 2025-2026 recipient of the Dave Miletich Volunteer Coach of the Year Award. The annual award recognizes volunteer coaches who embody the compassion, encouragement and community spirit of the late Dave Miletich, a longtime City employee, dedicated volunteer coach, and cherished mentor.

Pongon was selected from a pool of 141 volunteer coaches who served the City’s youth sports programs from fall 2025 through spring 2026. Nominations praised his patience, kindness and ability to create a positive team environment where every child feels valued, supported, and encouraged to grow.

Parents shared how Pongon takes the time to get to know his players, recognize their individual strengths and challenges, and help them build confidence. He teaches soccer fundamentals alongside teamwork, sportsmanship, and resilience, while making sure practices and games remain fun. His commitment to giving every player opportunities to participate and try different positions helps ensure no child feels overlooked.

“Volunteer coaches are the heart of our youth sports programs,” said David Perlick, director of Vancouver Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services. “Marc demonstrates the values that made Dave Miletich such a special colleague, mentor and coach. He helps young athletes develop their skills and confidence while making sure they feel included, supported and excited to play. That balance is what makes a lasting difference in a child's experience with sports.”

The award was established in 2025 to honor Miletich's enduring influence on Vancouver's recreation programs and recognize volunteer youth coaches who exemplify his spirit of service. Miletich served the City for more than 17 years as Recreation Manager and Assistant Parks and Recreation Director. He was instrumental in the construction of Firstenburg Community Center in 2006 and the renovation of Marshall Community Center in 2007. Beyond his professional accomplishments, Miletich was a dedicated volunteer coach for his three sons and a champion for community-based recreation.

The Dave Miletich Volunteer Coach of the Year Award is presented annually to one outstanding volunteer coach. The recipient receives a personal certificate, and award winners are recognized on plaques at Firstenburg Community Center, 700 N.E. 136th Ave., and Marshall/Luepke Community Center, 1009 E. McLoughlin Blvd., in Vancouver.
