Vancouver, Wash. – The City of Vancouver is requesting feedback from people who live, work and play on the west side of the city about creation of new north-south bike routes.
The Westside Bike Mobility Project came from a recommendation in the City’s Westside Mobility Strategy, which was approved by Vancouver City Council in 2016 (www.cityofvancouver.us/wms). Following a year of public engagement, the strategy proposed various solutions to traffic safety, mobility and bicycle/pedestrian problems being experienced in neighborhoods and business districts west of Interstate 5.
One of the recommendations of the strategy was for additional north-south bike routes to better connect the west side neighborhoods to downtown Vancouver.
Based on public feedback received during the creation of the Westside Mobility Strategy, at least one of the new bike routes will include protected lanes and/or a neighborhood greenway to provide a safe and accessible facility for all ages and abilities. Potential route locations could include Columbia, Daniels and Washington streets and Lincoln Avenue.
When the Westside Bike Mobility Project is complete, the bike routes will be developed over time, as funding allows, including through making changes to existing roadway striping or signage as part of the City’s regular summer paving projects or other planned street improvement projects. This includes a project planned in 2019 that will resurface Columbia Street between Fourth Plain Boulevard and the downtown ramp to I-5 southbound.
In anticipation of this project, the City is currently soliciting feedback about the new bike routes through presentations to neighborhood associations, at local events and on the web at www.cityofvancouver.us/BikeMobility.
Upcoming public events where people can learn about the project and provide input include the Vancouver Farmers Market next to Esther Short Park on Saturday, Sept. 22, and during the Vancouver Waterfront grand opening event on Saturday, Sept. 29, where the project team will be providing bike parking and sharing information on the project in the courtyard behind Vancouver City Hall, 415 W. 6th St.
