YMCA Building To Remain A City-Owned Facility, Operated By YMCA -03/06/25

The city-owned recreational facility, Sherwood Family YMCA, will continue to be operated by the Sherwood YMCA as a city-owned facility for the foreseeable future. Mayor Tim Rosener announced today that the previously agreed-upon sale of the facility to the YMCA of Columbia-Willamette for $5 million will no longer proceed.

“While the sale of the facility will not move forward, the YMCA remains a valued partner in our community,” Mayor Rosener said. “We have a strong partnership and will continue working under the existing operating agreement. Our shared commitment to providing exceptional services to the Sherwood community remains unchanged.”

The Sherwood Family YMCA has been a community cornerstone for decades. In 1996, Sherwood residents approved a bond measure to raise funds for the building's construction. Subsequently, the City entered into an agreement with the YMCA of Columbia-Willamette, allowing the organization to operate the facility as a recreation and aquatic center.

The current operating agreement ensures that the Sherwood Family YMCA remains a vital community resource, continuing to provide recreational, educational, and wellness programs without disruption. By maintaining city ownership and YMCA management, the agreement allows for stability and consistency in services while preserving community access to high-quality programs and facilities. The agreement has three and a half years remaining and is set to expire on October 31, 2028.
