Road Work To Close Access Through Wahanna (Photo) - 06/21/23
SEASIDE, Ore. – June 21, 2023 – A critical culvert and road construction project will affect traffic patterns in Seaside and close north/south access on S. Wahanna Road at Coho Creek near the Wahanna Ballfields beginning Monday, June 26. The closure is estimated to last five weeks, and estimated to open by August 1.
During construction, S. Wahanna Road will be closed to northbound traffic just past Spruce Drive and closed to southbound traffic just past the Wahanna Ballfields. Access to Seaside Providence Hospital will be via Broadway, 12th Avenue, or Lewis and Clark Road to Wahanna. Access to Pacific Ridge, and the Seaside Middle/High schools will be via Avenue S. Signs will be posted along US Highway 101 (Roosevelt Drive) and S. Wahanna to alert and remind motorists throughout the project.
Coho Creek is a tributary to Neawanna Creek that currently runs through a 36-inch corrugated steel culvert under S. Wahanna that needs replacement, along with two additional degraded and partially blocked culverts immediately upstream that must be removed. The project will install a 19-foot bottomless arch culvert beneath S. Wahanna, which will help control flooding within the local waterways and enhance passage of native fish, including coho, Chinook, chum, Pacific lamprey, winter steelhead and cutthroat trout.
The City of Seaside and Necanicum Watershed Council have worked with partners at the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board, and the Pacific Lamprey Foundation since 2016 to secure funding for this project. This information and any updates can be found on the city’s website, cityofseaside.us.
