Salem Fire Department Mourns The Loss Of Retired Captain Larry Dean, Honoring His Legacy Of Service And Dedication - 09/18/24
Salem, Ore. — It is with deep sadness that Salem Fire Chief Mike Niblock and the Salem Fire Department announce the line-of-duty death of retired Captain Larry Dean on September 13, 2024, due to occupational cancer. Captain Dean served the Salem Fire Department for over three decades, leaving a legacy of commitment, leadership, and service to the City of Salem.
Captain Dean served the Salem Fire Department from July 1987 to December 2018, fulfilling nearly every role within the department. His extensive contributions included being a member of the SWAT Team, Technical Rescue Team, Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) Team, Water Rescue Team, and Rescue Boat Operator, as well as serving on the Aircraft Rescue & Fire Fighting (ARFF) Team. Additionally, he took on leadership roles as a Working Out of Class (WOC) Battalion Chief (BC), Acting in Capacity (AIC) BC, Wildland Engine Boss, and Strike Team Leader. Captain Dean also played a pivotal role in training many probationary employees, serving as both a Medic Evaluator and as a Captain.
The Salem Fire Department, along with Captain Dean’s family and loved ones, invite the public and members of the firefighting community to join in honoring his life and service at a funeral ceremony.

All uniformed personnel attending the service are requested to wear their department’s Class “A” dress uniform or duty uniform, with mourning bands worn over badges.
The family has requested that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Humane Society in Larry Dean’s name. A reception will immediately follow the service.
