Airport Hosts Mass Casualty Drill September 13 - 09/11/23

  • Emergency personnel and resources around airport will be engaged in a drill Wednesday morning.
  • Airport will remain open.
  • Everbridge community alerts will not be use for the drill.

Salem, Ore. —  If you hear sirens and see lots of emergency personnel and vehicles around the airport on the morning of Wednesday, September 13, don’t be alarmed. It’s only a drill – a full-scale mass casualty drill to test the airport emergency plan.

The exercise is expected to take about three and a half hours. It will be limited to the Salem Airport’s southern boundary.  The objectives are to test and update the Airport Emergency Plan and the Transportation Safety Administration Security Plan. A mass casualty drill to test the Airport Emergency Plan is required every three years and the Transportation Safety Administration requires a drill before commercial air service commences.

Real-world emergencies are also factored into exercise logistics. So drill participants are also prepared to address an actual illness, injury or other emergency.

A wide range of City of Salem departments and teams will be involved in the drill, including:

  • Airport Management Team
  • Emergency Management
  • Willamette Valley Communications Center
  • Fire Department
  • Police Department
  • Risk/Safety

Participants will play a variety of roles including players, controllers, simulators, evaluators, observers, media personnel and support staff.

Following the drill, a post exercise debriefing will include a “hot wash” where players discuss the strengths and areas for improvement, while evaluators seek clarification regarding player actions and decision-making processes. Participants will also be asked to complete feedback forms.
