Apply Now: $80,000 Available to Salem Property Owners for Site Reuse and Revitalization - 04/13/18

Salem, Ore. – Apply now. The City of Salem has $80,000 available to assist local property owners with environmental cleanup as they revitalize sites throughout the city. The funds are available through a grant from the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and can be used for environmental assessment and reuse planning. This grant program provides one more “tool” to assist Salem property owners with site reuse and redevelopment. These funds are available until Sept. 2018.

Sites eligible for the EPA grant funding include:

  • Vacant or underutilized sites, including where redevelopment or re-use is planned
  • Historic buildings with asbestos, lead paint, or other hazardous materials
  • Dry cleaners, manufacturing sites, or other former uses with suspected environmental contamination
  • Former agricultural or institutional uses, including state or county owned property

The Site Reuse and Revitalization Program funds are available for Phase I and Phase II Environmental Assessments, as well as reuse and redevelopment planning (including market studies, traffic studies, and master planning).

Environmental assessment and cleanup are often critical components of site revitalization. For example, Pacific Office Automation recently received assistance from the Site Reuse and Revitalization Program when they renovated a vacant downtown building at 260 Liberty Street NE. The Program funded the building’s Phase I Environmental Assessment. In total, the company invested $1.3M in the downtown building renovation and relocated 22 employees to the space.
