News Release

Steptoe Street Closure Scheduled May 14–18 For Railroad And Signal Replacement - 05/08/26

The City of Richland is advising the public of an upcoming temporary road closure as part of the ongoing Steptoe Street and Tapteal Drive Intersection Reconstruction Project.

Beginning Thursday May 14, Steptoe Street will be closed between Gage Boulevard and the Columbia Park Trail roundabout. The closure is necessary to allow the project’s contractor to remove and replace the existing railroad tracks and signal infrastructure. Steptoe Street is expected to reopen to traffic on the morning of Monday, May 18, though reopening could be impacted by site conditions. Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead for their Monday commute.

During the closure, detours will be in place directing traffic via Leslie Road and Center Parkway. Local access to side streets off Steptoe Street will be maintained. Through traffic is restricted.  Pedestrian and bicycle detours will also be provided.

In addition, the west end of Tapteal Drive remains closed for ongoing reconstruction work. Traffic on Tapteal Drive continues to be detoured via Center Parkway and Columbia Center Boulevard. Emergency access will be maintained at all times, and traffic control measures will be in place to guide drivers safely through the area.

This project is a major reconstruction effort designed to improve traffic safety, circulation, and long-term infrastructure reliability at one of Richland’s busiest intersections. Planned improvements include the realignment of Tapteal Drive, construction of a new westbound intersection leg to support adjacent commercial development, installation of a new traffic signal, replacement of railroad infrastructure, and enhanced pedestrian facilities. The project also includes installation of a new water main to increase fire flow capacity and strengthen water system reliability.

Motorists traveling through the area should anticipate delays, especially during peak travel times, and are encouraged to allow extra time, follow posted signage, and use designated detour routes.

This is a private developer-funded project, permitted by the City of Richland and constructed by the developer’s contractor. Construction schedules may change due to weather or other unforeseen conditions.

The City appreciates the public’s patience and cooperation as this important infrastructure investment moves forward.
