On July 5, 2022, Richland City Council confirmed the appointment of D. Shayne VanDyke as Interim Councilmember, Position No. 5.
City Clerk, Jennifer Rogers, performed the swearing-in of VanDyke after which he took his seat at the dais with the other councilmembers.
VanDyke and his wife have lived in Richland for nearly 20 years, raising all four of their children in the community. He is currently a Project and Cybersecurity Program Manager at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL).
Shayne earned his MBA from Washington State University in 2007 and a bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University in 2001, majoring in Business Management and minoring in Political Science. He has enjoyed serving his community through the Boy Scouts of America, Junior Achievement, and coaching youth sports.
VanDyke fills the position left vacant by the resignation of Phillip Lemley on June 1, 2022. The Richland City Charter directs remaining councilmembers to appoint someone to serve as an interim councilmember until the term for that position expires. The next general election for Position No. 5 is in November 2023.
Council solicited applications from interested citizens to fill the vacancy. Twelve applications were received. After careful consideration, Council interviewed three applicants, subsequently voting unanimously to appoint VanDyke.
Richland Mayor Michael Alvarez states, “I look forward to working with Mr. VanDyke on the City Council and am confident he has the best interest of our citizens in mind. We welcome him and appreciate his desire to serve his community.”
