The Tyrone S. Woods Memorial Park Dedication Event is scheduled for Saturday, May 15, 2021, 2 p.m. at 14520 Meyers Road. The event will officially open the park and unveil the granite memorial in Wood’s honor. The event, which would typically be open to the public, is invite-only to maintain executive orders limiting gatherings. This is a nonpolitical commemoration of courage, sacrifice, and patriotism.
Speakers include Rachel Lyles Smith, Oregon City Mayor, Capitan Ryan Schleicher, Officer of Naval Special Warfare Unity Three, Command Master Chief Walter S. Dittmar, Senior Enlisted Leader of Naval Special Warfare Center, DJ Ruger, Oregon City Veteran of Foreign Wars Post #1324, and Cheryl Bennett, Wood’s mother.
The 9-acre park will protect and restore natural resources while creating an engaging place for active and passive recreation for users of all ages and abilities. The park includes site amenities including winding looped pathways, open lawn areas, picnic shelter, benches, nature playground, and a fenced off-leash dog park. Subsequent phases are planned to include pickleball courts and skate amenities.
The park will be named after Tyrone S. Woods, who was a native Oregonian and a 1989 graduate of Oregon City High School. He was a state champion wrestler and went on to serve his country as a US Navy SEAL. Tyrone perished in Benghazi on September 12, 2012, while serving with the CIA defending American lives.
The Oregon City Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 1324 raised $36,000 for the design, fabrication, installation, and maintenance of a permanent stone memorial, flagpole, and lighting at the park.
Tapani, Inc. Construction and Lango Hansen Landscape Architects built the park which cost $2,603,000 and paid for through system development charges. Oregon Parks and Recreation Department Local Government Grant Program provided $496,685 to this project.
