City Of Newberg Seeks Community Input On Rent Burden And Middle Housing -12/08/20

(NEWBERG, OR) – The City of Newberg is holding two online discussions in the coming week related to affordable housing in Newberg. The first, a Public Forum on Middle Housing will be held on Tuesday, December 15 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. The second is a community discussion on Rent Burden which will be held on December 16, from 6:00pm to 7:00pm. Both events will be held through Zoom. Attendees can attend online or by calling into the meeting.

The Online Public Forum on Middle Housing will focus on updates to City zoning codes to allow various forms of middle housing in locations currently zoned for single-family detached dwellings. The public forum will present each type of middle housing (duplex, triplex, quadplex, cottage clusters, and townhomes) while allowing attendees a chance to discuss their preferences and ask questions in between each presented option. A questionnaire will be released following the event for those unable to attend, or those who wish to add additional input. Those interested can attend the event on December 15 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm through the meeting link (https://zoom.us/j/99718918307) or by calling +1 253 215 8782 and entering webinar ID 997 1891 8307. The Newberg Middle Housing Code Assistance Project will bring the Newberg Development Code into compliance with House Bill 2001 and Oregon Administrative Rules for Middle Housing.

The Online Community Discussion on Rent Burden is an opportunity for community members to provide input, share experiences, and learn about the causes of rising rent in the community. A “rent burdened” city is defined as a city in which more than 25% of renters pay more than 50% of their monthly income on rent. Newberg has been identified as a rent burdened community by the State of Oregon, and following the discussion, a report will be submitted to the State’s Housing and Community Services Department. Those looking to join and share their stories, solutions, and input can attend the event on December 16, from 6:00pm to 7:00pm through the meeting link (https://zoom.us/j/97622155515) or by calling +1 253 215 8782 and entering webinar ID 976 2215 5515.

Both meetings and projects speak directly to addressing affordable housing options in Newberg. Questions about both events can be sent to Community Development Director Doug Rux at doug.rux@newbergoregon.gov.
