(NEWBERG, OR) – On November 15, 2019, nine Newberg-Dundee Police Department members were recognized at the Oregon Peace Officers Association’s (OPOA) 50th Annual Awards Banquet. According to the OPOA’s website: “The Oregon Peace Officers Association presents awards to law enforcement personnel who have performed exemplary deeds or services on behalf of their communities during the previous year.”

Officer Steve Schoening received the Distinguished Service Award. This award is given to an individual who has exceptional accomplishments and who “has distinguished himself or herself while performing highly creditable or unusual actions.”

Officer Nathan James received a Medal of Valor. The Medal of Valor is given to an officer who shows exceptional professionalism in the line of duty and reduces the risk of loss of life or injury to citizens when reacting to situations. The Medal of Valor involves “incidents of exceptional bravery” in which an officer does what needs to be done in the most professional matter possible.

Seven Newberg-Dundee Police Department members received the Life Saving Award including:

  • Officer Tom Sattler
  • Officer Dan Fouch
  • Officer Justin Caughlin
  • Officer Ariel Siqueiros
  • Officer Jeromy Pilon
  • Sergeant Mark Cooke
  • Captain Jeff Kosmicki

The Life Saving Award is awarded to “individuals who, while serving in an official capacity with their law enforcement agency, directly perform an active, distinct and successful lifesaving procedure saving the life of another human being in the midst of unusual actions above and beyond their normal job expectations.” Captain Kosmicki was one of only two patrol captains in the state to receive an award.

The City of Newberg would like to offer congratulations to all of the award winners.
