Gresham Celebrates Law Enforcement Week Through Collaboration - 05/20/22

GRESHAM, Ore. – As National Law Enforcement Week comes to a close, the City of Gresham would like to recognize and celebrate the work of the Gresham Police Department. Over the past couple of years, the Gresham Police Department has experienced challenges as many law enforcement agencies have. However, their ongoing commitment to the Gresham community is appreciated.   

“I am deeply grateful for the bravery and dedication of the Gresham Police Department,” said City Manager Nina Vetter. “I look forward to continuing to work collaboratively with the Gresham Police Department and the Gresham Police Officers Association as we all strive towards the common goal of a safe Gresham.”  

Despite staffing shortages and recruitment struggles, the Gresham Police Department continues to provide exceptional services to this community including such advancements as:  

  • Adding additional mental health clinicians to our Behavioral Health Unit to enhance our work around mental health and crisis response.
  • Engaging with community members through outreach, listening sessions, and fostering relationships with community-based organizations. 
  • Reimagining police services to include increasing professional civilian support staff to help address crime and livability concerns. 
  • Expanding our focus on recruitment and retention efforts. By embracing new strategies and technologies, the ability to hire the right applicant for our community is improved.  

Deputy City Manager Corey Falls stated, “I am proud of the accomplishments of the Gresham Police Department and their continuous commitment to the safety of our community.”  

Like many cities across the country, the City of Gresham faces significant hurdles as we continue to navigate the impacts of the pandemic. Yet, it is with a renewed sense of collaboration that we will move forward from this moment. 

"The men and women of the Gresham Police Officer's Association are honored to serve this incredible community,” said Gresham Police Officers Association President Tommy Walker. “Over the last two years, law enforcement has been faced with many challenges. Here in Gresham, our members remain optimistic about what the future will bring. We would like to take this opportunity to thank our City leadership for their open support and are pleased to have a collaborative rapport."  

As we conclude National Law Enforcement Week, we reflect on the great work that has been done by the Gresham Police Department and are hopeful that the steps being taken as we all work together will create a safe and inclusive Gresham for all.
