GRESHAM, Ore. – The City of Gresham allocated a total of $20,000 in grants to four community organizations for projects that improve the quality of life for residents of Gresham. A diverse mix of projects will take place across the city including special needs student educational programs, senior citizen digital access and youth recreation opportunities. This new grant is funded by Metro solid waste franchise fees and is awarded to organizations that improve neighborhood livability, economic opportunities and more.
The inaugural grant process was highly competitive, with strong proposals submitted by several organizations. Funding was awarded to the following organizations and projects:
- Gresham Ebetsu Sister City Association: $7,500 to upgrade the existing Main City Park Resource Center and to construct a new greenhouse. These additions will better serve special needs students who participate in hands on educational programs at the park’s Tsuru Island Japanese Garden.
- Beyond Black CDC: $5,000 to improve the safety and utility of program space at the Knova Learning Center Campus in Rockwood, including creation of a youth-led community garden as well as enhancement of existing sports field and play area.
- MetroEast Community Media: $4,000 to produce a series of short video vignettes showcasing the businesses, non-profits, culture and tourism activities available in Gresham.
- Gresham Senior Center: $3,500 to upgrade and network outdated computers in its training facility, which will allow Gresham senior citizens to access resources and stay connected.
A Community Enhancement Advisory Committee comprised of residents and elected officials allocated the grant awards. The grant cycle is anticipated to open again in fall 2019. For more information about the grants, visit www.GreshamOregon.gov/Community-Enhancement-Grants.
