Each year, Battle Ground Police Department employees select an officer to recognize for his or her exemplary performance. The Officer of the Year award for 2017 was presented to Officer Ed Michael at the March 5th Battle Ground City Council meeting. He was surrounded by family, friends and fellow law enforcement officers as he received the award.

Officer Michael has served the community of Battle Ground since 2005. His work with the Battle Ground Police Department includes specialty assignments as a Field Training Officer, Taser Instructor, and Patrol Bike Instructor.

In 2017 he was recognized by the Washington Traffic Safety Commission's Target Zero program with the Top Performer Award. He participated and performed at a high level in a number of safety emphasis patrols including DUI, Pedestrian Safety, and Distracted Driving.

His colleagues at the Battle Ground Police Department characterize Officer Michael as consistently having a positive attitude, an exemplary work ethic, and as a person they call upon for advice, support, and mentorship.

Police Chief Bob Richardson presented the award, stating "For his outstanding service to the community, which reflects the mission and values of the Battle Ground Police Department, it is my honor to name Officer Ed Michael as our 2017 Officer of the Year."
