Camas High School Select Vocal Ensemble Takes on Vivaldi's "Gloria" - 12/03/18

CAMAS, WASHINGTON—During the month of December, Camas High School’s Select Vocal Ensemble will give two public performances of Antonio Vivaldi’s famous 30-minute masterwork, “Gloria,” in its entirety. Divided into 12 distinct and complex movements involving lengthy duets, solos and the accompaniment of a full chamber orchestra, “Gloria” is an exceptionally large feat for a high school choir.

The performances will take place on Dec. 12 at The Grotto, in Portland, during the Festival of Lights, and on Dec. 18 at Camas High School, during the annual CHS Winter Choir Concert.

Camas High School Choir Director Ethan Chessin, firmly believes his students are up to the challenge. “I’m impressed with how eager my students are to take on this project!  They’ve been working so hard, and this group is just so talented. I can’t wait for audiences to see how much they are capable of.”

Each December, the choirs of Camas High School perform at Portland’s famous Catholic sanctuary, The Grotto, on 8840 NE Skidmore St. The concert is a beloved event among choir students because of the lovely display of Christmas lights and the magical experience of singing in the sanctuary’s cathedral. The cathedral is the type of space in which a baroque-age piece such as “Gloria” was designed to be performed. With this unique blend of venue and material, the upcoming Grotto concert of December 12 will be a seminal and exciting event.

This year’s Grotto event will mark the first partnership between the newly formed Camas High School Chamber Orchestra and the Camas High School Choir programs. For orchestra members, this collaboration is an opportunity to showcase their skills alongside the talented Camas choirs.

“I’m really excited,” said freshmen Luke Martinez, a member of Select Vocal Ensemble and Chamber Orchestra. “I feel that it’s going to be a good experience for everyone.”

The ensemble and orchestra’s Grotto performance will run from 8:00 to 9:50 p.m. on Wed., Dec. 12. Admission to the festival is $12 for general admission, $11 for seniors and military, $6 for children age 3-12 and free for children 2 and under. There is no additional fee for the concert.

The annual CHS Winter Choir Concert takes place at Camas High School (26900 SE 15th St, Camas, WA 98607) from 7-9 p.m. on Dec. 18, and admission is free. All five CHS choirs, including the ensemble, will perform. While both events are showcases for families to usher in the holiday season, all are welcome.
