Camas Lions Club Buzzes Into Second Place At Camas Days Parade (Photo) -08/05/24

The Camas Lions Club took home another trophy, placing second in the float division at the 2024 Camas Days Grand Parade. The parade theme, America the Beautiful, inspired their float titled 'Camas the BEE-utiful,' decorated with flowers, bees, and butterflies to promote pollinator awareness. They handed out delicious 'bit-oh-honey' treats and honey-filled hard candies to the crowd.

Leading up the to event, Lions and friends created tissue flower including native plants such as Camas Lilies, Wild Irises, Dandelions, and Nootka Roses.  ADS Drainage Pipe in Washougal donated 100 feet of pipe for the construction of the giant beehive!  On parade day, it was game on – with a flurry of decorating and last minute costume adjustments.

Pollinators: Nature's Tiny Superheroes
Bees and butterflies are vital to our ecosystem, ensuring a bountiful harvest and a stable food supply. These tireless pollinators flit from flower to flower, enabling plant reproduction. Leslie and Denise represented the farmers and gardeners who rely on these essential creatures.

Beekeepers: Champions of Pollination

Neil Day, the mastermind behind the float's construction and driving, donned a bee costume alongside  'Big Bird' (his yellow truck) which carried the giant beehive.

The beekeeper group, including Susan Scott, Caleb Day, and Jody Cross, highlighted the crucial role beekeepers play in maintaining healthy bee populations.

Butterflies: Indicators of Environmental Health
The butterfly group, featuring Tim Eubank, Peggy Liggit, and Tammie Coelho, symbolized the importance of butterflies as pollinators and environmental indicators. Their populations reflect the health of ecosystems, alerting us to potential threats. Butterflies are also a vital food source for predators, maintaining the delicate balance of the food chain.
