On February 14 at approximately 2:23 pm, Camas-Washougal Fire Department was dispatched to a report of a residential fire alarm activation in the area of NW 27th Ave in Camas. On arrival, crews noticed smoke coming out the front door while at the same time hearing a subject in the attached garage yelling for "help." Recognizing they faced an imminent rescue situation, the engine crew called for more assistance while donning their Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA). Firefighters Mark Widlund and Jeff Martizia make a cut in the garage door where they quickly found an approximately 70 year male who had become disoriented and nearly incapacitated by the smoke. He was safely removed from the structure along with his two dogs. The patient was transported to an area hospital for treatment of possible burns and smoke inhalation. His present condition is unknown at this time.
Camas-Washougal Fire Department was assisted by units from the Vancouver Fire Department and East County Fire and Rescue. Further investigation found a small fire that is believed to have started in the kitchen and then quickly spread to the surrounding wall and ceiling. The fire was quickly extinguished, but there was extensive smoke damage to the entire structure. No damage estimate is known at this time.
