The Colorado Springs School (CSS), located in the heart of Broadmoor, kicked off its 60th academic year on August 24. Established in 1962 by a group desiring to provide a strong, academically innovative, college-preparatory school for girls in Colorado Springs, CSS today is the only PreKindergarten through grade 12 private day and international school in the region.

Despite experiencing much growth since it welcomed its first student body of 23 girls, the now 337-student, co-ed school strives to remain true to its roots. "Today, we focus on serving all students, giving them the opportunity to receive the finest experiential education available," said Head of School Tambi L. Tyler.

Along with displaying historic artifacts for all to see in the Rotunda of its highly-trafficked Trianon, the school will tie its storied past into several performing arts and community-wide events throughout the academic year. This past Saturday, September 17, CSS hosted Colorado Springs’ greatest champions on campus for a celebration of the many community connections forged throughout the school’s 60-year history.

“We’re honored to be part of a community of leaders who have chosen to invest in our children just as much as our current and former families, administrators, and faculty do,” Tyler said. “Their support, fiscally and physically, is crucial in preparing our students to become the next generation of leaders and trailblazers in Colorado Springs and around the world.”

The event, which took place in CSS’s 22,000-square-foot Trianon – added to the National Register of Historic Places in the late ’70s and fashioned in 1907 by prominent local architect Thomas MacLaren to resemble the Grand Trianon at Versailles – included greetings from Tyler as well as remarks from other valuable members of the school community. They included Board of Trustees Chair Heather Kelly and 2021 CSS graduate Aadi Nashikkar, who is currently attending Stanford University. Guests were also treated to a musical performance by student pianist Meia A. ’26 and to a reading of a formal proclamation from the city of Colorado Springs, which designated September 17, 2022, as the 60th Anniversary Celebration for The Colorado Springs School.

For six decades, CSS has utilized superior academics and mentoring to prepare students to think independently and to meet the challenges of a dynamic world with leadership, ingenuity, problem-solving skills, and personal integrity. CSS is best known for its “whole child” approach to teaching, its 28-acre campus complete with eight buildings including the historic Trianon, and its experiential education (ExEd) programs in the classroom and beyond.

"Through experiential education, CSS gives students the opportunity to push beyond their comfort zone and take on learning in a whole new way,” said Kelly, likewise a parent to two children at CSS. “Ask any parent or educator here, they have a story or several to share. CSS is truly living its mission of preparing students for a dynamic world."

Colorado Springs families can participate in some of the same hands-on learning and team-building activities that have a transformational impact on CSS students during an ExEd Expo on Saturday, October 15, from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. The school’s signature ExEd program – available to students beginning as early as PreKindergarten – enables children to grow beyond their comfort zones at an early age via hands-on learning and problem-solving, and culminates with a fully immersive Capstone experience during senior year. Activities at this year’s expo will include gold-panning with the Gold Prospectors of Colorado, a 24-foot climbing wall, and a meet-and-greet with Master Falconer Roger Tuckers’ birds of prey.

“As we celebrate our 60th year, we will look to build on the past to prepare CSS for an even better tomorrow,” said Tyler, CSS’s 10th head of school, third female head of school, and the first person of color to lead the PreK-12 academic institution.
