D11 Kindergarteners Race into Learning with KinDerby Peak Experience
Colorado Springs, CO — Kindergarten students across Colorado Springs School District 11 are taking part in KinDerby, a hands-on Peak Experience that combines science, math, art, financial literacy, and friendly competition.
In the weeks leading up to race day, students designed and built their own pinewood derby cars, learning about concepts like force, motion, measurement, and decision-making with classroom “currency” used to purchase materials or upgrades. With support from the district’s Visual and Performing Arts team, students also painted and decorated their cars using techniques like base coats and racing stripes.
This week, kindergarten classes are traveling to D11 high schools to test and race their creations on tracks built by high school students, creating an exciting cross-grade learning experience. The event is supported in partnership with Scouting America.
KinDerby Schedule (9 a.m. – 2 p.m.):
