Media Alert News Release: Special Veterans' Day Events - 11/09/17

Schools across Colorado Springs School District 11 are honoring Veterans in many different ways. These are just two of the examples, and the media is invited to attend these events.

On Friday, November 10, at 12:30 p.m., there will be an assembly at Rogers Elementary School, 110 S. Circle Dr., and a student there will get a SURPRISE visit from his father, who is stationed at Fort Hood in Texas and has just returned from Kuwait. Please check in with the office upon arrival at the school. (contact: Jenny Courtier, 328-3325)

On Friday, November 10, William Mitchell High School's Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC), social studies, band, and choir departments will host a Veterans Day celebration in honor of the military men and women who faithfully served our country. This year's theme is "Bring a Veteran to School," and Mitchell students will be celebrating and recognizing their staff and family members who are veterans or are currently serving in the military. The Veterans Day celebration will include the following activities:
* Continental Breakfast for Students and Veterans (8:15 -- 9 am)
* Flag Raising Ceremony, Reveille (9:15 -- 9:25 am)
* Veterans Day Assembly for Students and Military Veterans (9:45- 10:30 am)

During the school assembly, cadets will perform a flag folding ceremony and a tribute to the Prisoner of War/Missing in Action; the choir and band will sing and play patriotic songs; and students will also be recognized for competing in a school-wide essay writing contest. Mitchell JROTC Cadets will also be visiting military veterans at a few of the senior citizen living facilities in Colorado Springs. (contact: Lt. Col. Woodfork, 328-6656; location: Mitchell High School, 1205 Potter Dr.)
