College Place Public Schools has been recognized by the Washington Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) with the inaugural State Superintendent’s Award for Educational Excellence in Student Progress. This recognition places College Place among the top 10% of school districts in Washington for improvement in student progress over the past three years.
The two State Superintendent’s Awards for Educational Excellence recognize the top 10% of school districts across Washington in two areas: exceptional student achievement in the previous school year and exceptional student progress over the past three years.
“This recognition reflects the hard work of our students, staff, and families,” said Superintendent Jim Fry. “We have focused on improving the conditions that support student success, including increasing student attendance, strengthening reading and math outcomes, and expanding opportunities for students to earn college credit while still in high school. This award is attributed to an exceptional staff doing this great work each day."
The Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction evaluates districts for this award using a series of indicators connected to both student opportunity and student outcomes.
Student opportunity measures include regular attendance, kindergarten readiness, participation in highly capable programs, access to high school level math in eighth grade, and participation in dual credit opportunities including Career and Technical Education (CTE).
Student outcome measures include fourth grade reading, eighth grade reading, eighth grade math, ninth graders on track to graduate, and the four-year graduation rate. These indicators align with the state’s Annual Snapshot on Student Opportunity and Outcomes, which tracks how districts are progressing across key milestones from early learning through high school graduation.
Recent data from College Place Public Schools shows strong improvement across the majority of these areas. The district has seen significant gains in regular attendance, meaningful growth in middle school reading and math achievement, and expanded participation in dual credit opportunities for students. Many of the district indicators are performing above the state average, reflecting continued progress in supporting students from early learning through graduation.
“This recognition reinforces that the work happening in our classrooms and schools is making a real difference for students,” Fry said. “Just last month the community once again entrusted us with their Levy dollars and this is evidence that we are putting those dollars to great use.”
