2 Alarm Duplex Fire Displaces One Family (Photo)
- 07/12/23
July 12th at 6:19PM Cowlitz County Fire District 5, Kalama WA, was dispatched to a duplex fire in the 700 block of Military Road. At the time of dispatch, it was reported that flames were coming out of the windows and neighbors were trying to determine if the unit was occupied. A 2nd alarm was immediately called.
A young boy from a neighboring duplex saw the fire and alerted the occupants of the burning duplex. His actions likely saved the family from injury. The fire had started on the exterior of the duplex, the occupants had no idea their building was on fire.
When firefighters arrived they confirmed both units of the duplex had been evacuated. Crews immediately started attacking the fire. Before units arrived, the fire had spread into the attic. A quick stop on the fire was completed, which kept the fire from spreading to the 2nd living unit. Three neighboring departments assisted in the fire: Longview Fire, Cowlitz 2 Fire and Rescue, and Cowlitz Fire District 1 from Woodland. Red Cross was called to assist the displaced family.
There were no injuries. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
A reminder to check your smoke detectors for proper operation. Replace batteries twice a year and replace smoke detectors when they expire.
