House Fire Destroys Home, Sends One Firefighter To The Hospital (Photo)

At 11:31pm Thursday night July 6th, Cowlitz County Fire District 5, Kalama Washington, was dispatched to the 400 block of North 2nd Street in Kalama, the caller stated they could see smoke coming from a house next door. A 2nd alarm was called as the first engine went in route. When the first engine arrived 9 minutes after dispatch there were flames coming from the roof, the first and 2nd level of the 2 story Victorian home, which was built in 1900. Crews immediately started to extinguish the fire and an interior search was started soon after. Crews were only able to complete a partial search of the interior of the home when the roof started to collapse. It was later confirmed that the homeowner was not at home at the time of the fire.
Fire crews responded from 3 neighboring fire agencies in Cowlitz County, plus, the City of Longview Fire department, and Clark/Cowlitz Fire and Rescue. Cowlitz PUD also responded to take care of downed power lines, and the City of Kalama Public Utilities assisted. 11 fire crews were on scene and 35 firefighters.
One firefighter was transported to St. John Hospital in Longview to be evaluated for a non-life-threatening injury, the firefighter was released a couple of hours later.
Crews will remain on scene most of the day to put out hot spots.
The home, valued at over $500,000, is likely a total loss.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
