Clackamas ESD Recognizes Local Student Artists - 05/04/18
Clackamas - On May 3, Clackamas Education Service District welcomed community members to walk a gallery of over 300 student exhibitors from 25 schools around the county. Ten students received awards for outstanding artwork.
Student artist June Bee from North Clackamas School District's Sabin-Schellenberg Professional Technical Center keynoted the event. She spoke about the process of getting to know herself through her art in the loneliest period of her life. She described a pivotal moment of self-discovery after moving to the United States:
“I looked at the reflection my phone screen makes and said to myself, ‘I hate you because you are too different.’ Suddenly, I realized that I used the word different, which is not necessarily a negative word. I’d never thought that maybe my weakness can also be something good about me.”
June went on to harness her unique lens to establish an international pen pal exchange program for Taiwanese and American students. She illustrated her journey of self in a triptych with one panel representing “rebuilding,” another “embracing” and a third “making the most out of myself.”
