UPDATE -- BODY IDENTIFICATION: Search underway for missing hiker on Mt. Hood; call 503-655-8211 if seen (Photo) - 10/11/18

UPDATE (Thursday, Oct. 11) — BODY ID, ADDITIONAL DETAILS

The deceased was extracted by rescuers to Timberline Lodge and turned over the Clackamas County Medical Examiner, who made a preliminary ID that this was in fact David Lee Yaghmourian, a 30-year-old graduate student from Glendale, Arizona.

The search mission began on Oct. 8, 2018 at about 5 p.m.  At that point Yaghmourian's hiking partner had been out of contact for about nine hours with Mr. Yaghmourian.  SAR assets were immediately put into the field.

An unaffiliated climber found a body later identified as Mr. Yaghmourian at about 8:30 this morning (Oct. 11, 2018).  Rescuers were sent to his location.

The deceased was found about 1.84 miles NE of Timberline Lodge, at an elevation of 8,270 feet at the top of White River Canyon.

 The family has been notified.

EARLIER (Oct. 11) -- PRESS BRIEFING ON BODY ID SCHEDULED

NOTE TO MEDIA: A press update with ID of the climber’s body is set for 3:20 p.m. at our Timberline Lodge command post.

EARLIER (OCT. 11, 1:45 P.M.) -- ADDITIONAL DETAILS FROM AFTERNOON PRESS EVENT

More details from Sgt. Collinson’s press conference:

At approximately 8:40 a.m. on Thursday, Oct, 11, a private climber attempting to summit Mt. Hood located a body at approximately the 8,300-foot elevation on the mountain, about a half-mile east of Silcox Hut. There was snow in the area.

This was outside our official search area by about 3,000 feet — higher than expected. Searchers had ascended to the 5,800-foot level, but had not found any indications that anyone else had gone through that area.

At this writing the body has NOT been confirmed as that of missing hiker David Yaghmourian.

The body is being transported down the mountain to the Clackamas County Medical Examiner for final determination of ID.

Mr. Yaghmourian's family has been notified of the find and given a chance to make notifications that a body has been found. The media's patience is appreciated as we make sure the family's needs are considered.

Per Sgt. Collinson: Details are subject to change, but early appraisals by searchers indicate that the located subject may have been hypothermic and was trying to set up a tent and sleeping bag using gear similar to Mr. Yaghmourian's. There are also early indications of an injury from a fall estimated at 30 feet. The Medical Examiner will make final determinations, and again, details are subject to change.

At this writing searchers believe the deceased may have missed a turn and headed up the mountain, and was trying to find a way back down. More discussion of this can be found around the 3:00 mark in the video of Sgt. Collinson's press briefing: https://www.facebook.com/clackcosheriff/posts/1946164192136125

The body is being packaged and will be brought down on a SKED to be transferred to a vehicle.

At this writing it is unknown how long the body had been at 8,300 feet.
