Boys & Girls Clubs Of The Portland Metropolitan Area Announces New 10-year Collaborative Partnership With PCC Structurals, Inc. - 02/15/23

Wattles Club in SE Portland to be renamed through transformative investment from PCC Structurals

(PORTLAND, OR) February 14, 2023 – Today, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Portland Metropolitan Area (“BGCP”) and PCC Structurals, Inc. (“PCC”) announced a new 10-year collaborative partnership. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Portland Metro is excited to announce that its Wattles Club in SE Portland will be renamed in September 2023 through a transformative investment by PCC.

“We are extremely excited about this partnership and opportunity to rename the Wattles Club after a dynamic community leader in Portland.  This is a uniquely significant moment for us because the Wattles Club is our flagship location where we established our very first stand-alone club in 1953 by converting the old Lents Elementary school into a Club after we were initially founded in 1946.  So, we’ve been serving the Greater Portland Area for 77 years, but directly serving the Lents neighborhood for 70 years at this particular location,” said Terry Johnson, CEO – Boys & Girls Clubs of Portland Metro.

In addition to PCC making a transformative financial investment in the BGCP, together BGCP and PCC will take a unique approach to the renaming process.  The Wattles Club will be renamed after a legacy leader of color who has made significant impact on the Portland community over the years through education, business or community.  A renaming committee – including a cross-section of BGCP representatives, PCC representatives, and community members – will decide upon an honoree over the next several months.  The honoree, in which the Club will be renamed after, will be announced in July, and a subsequent community event will be held in September 2023.

“I grew up attending the Wattles Club when I was a youth, so the Club holds a special place in my life. I would not be where I am as a business leader if it were not for my growing up as a Club Kid there in the Lents neighborhood.  Renaming the Club after a legacy leader of color from our community provides a unique opportunity to pay homage to someone who is a model of success for the youth we serve in marginalized and resilient communities,” said Mike Kuiawa, President – PCC Structurals, Large Casting Operations, and Board Member for Boys & Girls Clubs of Portland Metro.

The Wattles Club is located at 9330 SE Harold St. in the Lents neighborhood and is one of ten Clubs operated by Boys & Girls Clubs of Portland Metro serving Multnomah, Clackamas, and Washington counties.  BGCP impacts approximately 6,000 youth and families each year through in-club afterschool programming and a variety of community outreach events and activities, including health clinics, back-to-school, and cultural events.
