At approximately 9:31 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 29, Bend Police responded to a report of a woman running to a business in the 200 block of NE Third Street and reporting she had been sexually assaulted. 

The victim, a 39-year-old Bend woman, told Bend Police that while walking through the railroad underpass along Third Street, she encountered 40-year-old Sheldon Shawn Doveri, with whom she was vaguely acquainted. She briefly spoke with Doveri before he masturbated in front of her, tackled her and attempted to sexually assault her. 

As the victim fought to get away from Doveri, a bystander entered the underpass area, and Doveri ran away. The victim ran to get help and called 911, providing a description of the suspect. Officers found Doveri a short time later near NE Fourth Street and Hawthorne Avenue. He was arrested and transported to the Bend Police Department before being lodged at the Deschutes County Jail on suspicion of attempted first-degree rape, first-degree sexual abuse, harassment and public indecency. 

Bend Police have not yet identified the bystander who interrupted the assault, and detectives would like to speak with the man. Please call nonemergency dispatch at 541-693-6911 if you witnessed this incident.
