A Bend Police investigation determined that Aaron Polit, a 44-year-old Bend resident, drove to the area in a black 1988 Jeep and parked on NE Emerson Avenue. Multiple people witnessed the incident. A bystander with a valid concealed weapons permit drew his weapon and confronted Polit. Polit then dropped his handgun and officers arriving on scene took him into custody without incident.
Officers located a 9mm handgun on the ground near where Polit was taken into custody. Detectives performed a search of Polit’s Jeep at the scene and located body armor, a 12-gauge shotgun and ammunition.
Polit was transported to the Deschutes County Jail on the above offenses. He was also cited for unlawful discharge of a weapon in city limits.
The area around the scene remained closed until approximately 10:30 p.m. on Wednesday evening. Bend Police thank Oregon State Police and the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance in this case.
