Bend Man Arrested For Killing His Mother - 03/21/24

Incident: Bend man arrested for killing his mother

Date / Time of Incident: March 20, 2024 / 5:09 p.m. 

Location: 2000 block of NE Tucson Way, Bend

Arrested: Joshua Lawrence Smith, 40-year-old Bend resident

Offenses: Murder II 

Victim: Janice Marie Smith, 59-year-old Bend resident

At approximately 5:09 p.m. on Wednesday, March 20, Bend Police responded to the report of a domestic disturbance at the Legacy Landing Apartments in the 2000 block of NE Tucson Way. 

When officers arrived, they found a critically injured 59-year-old woman in an apartment on the premises. Officers performed CPR but the woman, identified as Janice Marie Smith, died at the scene. 

Officers detained Smith’s son, 40-year-old Bend resident Joshua Lawrence Smith, at the scene. 

He was transported first to the Bend Police Department, then to St. Charles Bend, and ultimately lodged at the Deschutes County Jail.  

An investigation is ongoing.
