Two Calls Of Armed Subjects Bring Large Police Response To NE Bend - 07/25/23

Date: July 25, 2023

Case #: 2023-00044986, 2023-00044987

Incident: Two calls of armed subjects bring large police response to NE Bend

Date / Time of Incident: July 24, 2023 / 10:01 p.m. and 10:06 p.m.

Location: NE 27th Street & Neff Road and Safeway East

In the span of five minutes on Monday, July 24, Bend Police responded to two calls of armed subjects in the same area.

At about 10:01 p.m., a man called dispatch to report that he had a gun and wanted police officers to kill him. St. Charles Bend and Prestige Senior Living went into a lockdown. Officers shut down traffic and staged a variety of resources in the area before contacting the man. He was taken into custody, unarmed, near NE Watt Way and NE Forum Drive at approximately 10:35 p.m., and transported to St. Charles Bend on a mental health hold. The case has been forwarded to the Deschutes County District Attorney’s Office.

Meanwhile at approximately 10:06 p.m., officers responded to Safeway East, where an active shooter incident took place 11 months ago, for a report of a man in the store with a rifle on his back and additional guns on his person. An unarmed security guard approached the man, who did not threaten anyone. The man cooperated and the security guard escorted him from the store. Law enforcement contacted the man, whose firearms turned out to be replicas. An investigation into the case continues.

The two incidents were not connected.

Oregon State Police and the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office assisted Bend Police on both calls.
