SECOND UPDATE: Fatal Hit-and-run At NW Newport & 14th Street Roundabout (Photo) -11/01/22

UPDATE #2: Bend Police are providing a surveillance photo of the suspect vehicle in Thursday’s fatal hit-and-run at the 14th and Newport roundabout. The vehicle is a dark-colored, larger SUV, possibly a Chevrolet Suburban, Lincoln Navigator or Cadillac Escalade. The vehicle has been described as clean and shiny, possibly a 2008 to 2012 model. 

An investigation indicates that after striking the victim in the northwest portion of the roundabout, the vehicle traveled south on NW 14th Street toward Galveston Avenue. It then traveled west on NW Galveston Avenue. Bend Police ask the public in that area to review any camera footage from Thursday, Oct. 27 between 9:30 p.m. and 10 p.m.

UPDATE: The victim in this hit-and-run crash, identified as 76-year-old Walter James Lane, has died from his injuries. Bend Police continue to investigate this incident and are seeking public assistance in locating the driver. More information may be forthcoming.

Incident: Serious Injury Hit and Run Crash

Date / Time of incident: Oct. 27, 2022 / 9:31 pm

Victim: 76-year-old male adult / Bend Resident

Location:  NW Newport Ave / NW 14th St roundabout

Narrative:

On Thursday, October 27th at 9:31 pm, Bend Police responded to a male down with injury at the NW Newport and NW 14th St round-a-bout.  Investigation revealed the severely injured male was the victim of a Felony Hit and Run motor vehicle crash.  The victim was transported by Bend Fire to St. Charles Hospital where he remains in critical condition with life-threatening injuries.  The cause and details of the crash remain under investigation.

Bend Police is seeking the public's help in locating the suspect and vehicle, which fled the scene after the crash, described as follows:  

Suspect vehicle: Described as being a dark colored larger SUV, possibly a Lincoln Navigator, Cadillac Escalade or Chevrolet Suburban.  The vehicle was described as being clean, shiny and possibly a 2008 to 2012 model.

Suspect: Described as a white male adult, 40-60 years of age, 5'10"-6'00", 180 lbs., medium build with brown hair and a scruffy brown beard.
