Bend Police Department Assist Deschutes County Sheriff's Office With Pursuit Of Stolen Vehicle (Photo) - 04/08/22

Incident:                 Stolen vehicle arrest following vehicle pursuit

Case Number:         2022-00019315

Date and Time:       Thursday April 7th, 2022/ 6:49 PM

Location:                 Start:  McGrath RD and Powell Butte HWY in Deschutes County

Finish:  Majestic View Lane east of Powell Butte HWY in Crook County

Suspect:                  Henry Oswaldo Duran               36-year-old    Bend resident

Narrative:

On 04-07-2022, at about 6:49 PM, an officer with the Bend Police Department located an occupied stolen vehicle in a dirt area near McGrath RD and Powell Butte HWY.  Henry Duran was believed to be the occupant of the vehicle and the officer knew Duran had a felony warrant for his arrest and recently eluded deputies from the Deschutes County Sheriff's Office.  The Bend Police Department requested the assistance of a Deschutes County Sheriff's Office K9 team due to Duran's likelihood of fleeing.  When officers attempted to contact Duran, he fled in the stolen vehicle and caused damage to a Bend Police Department vehicle and nearly hit a deputy. Duran fled through an off-road area and out onto Powell Butte Highway.  Bend Police officers did not pursue the vehicle due to the department's Pursuit Prohibition Policy.  The Deschutes County Sheriff's Office, however, did initiate a pursuit of the stolen vehicle and wanted subject.  Because the Deschutes County Sheriff's Deputy had no other deputies assisting him, officers with the Bend Police Department assisted the Deschutes County Sheriff's Office during the pursuit.  Duran eventually crashed his vehicle into two fences in Crook County and became stuck on a large rock.  Duran was taken into custody and later transported to ST Charles Medical Center for medical evaluation.

Duran was lodged at the Deschutes County Adult Jail on the following charges:

Unlawful Use of a Motor Vehicle,

Fleeing or Attempting to Elude a Police Officer - 2 counts,

Reckless Driving - 2 counts,

Driving Under the Influence of Drugs,

Reckless Endangering another Person - 3 counts,

Criminal Mischief I - 3 counts,

Criminal Mischief II,

and Warrant-Felony Abscond.

The Bend Police Department would like to thank the Deschutes County Sheriff's Office, the Oregon State Police and the Redmond Fire and Rescue for their assistance in this investigation.
