Joint Release from Bend Police and COCC regarding alleged handgun on campus today (Photo) - 10/07/21

On Thursday, October 7, 2021 at 3:12 pm, multiple callers reported a handgun was pointed at an occupied classroom at COCC Cascade Culinary Institute, located at 2555 NW Campus Village Way in Bend.

Bend Police, Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office, Oregon State Police and Redmond Police responded to the location.  COCC was placed on lockdown at 3:34 pm.  Pacific Crest and Summit High Schools were placed in SECURE (formerly Lock OUT).

The reporting party gave a description of a person who allegedly had the handgun.  Officers located and contacted the person matching the description at the campus.  He was not in possession of a handgun, but rather an orienteering compass.  It was determined the caller mistook an orienteering compass for a handgun.

The lockdowns were lifted from the schools about a half hour after they were in place.
