On 9-12-21 at about 2152 hours, Bend Police Officers were dispatched to a suspected DUII driver in the 1900 block of NE 3rd St. A witnessed advised a white pickup was traveling northbound on NE 3rd St and just hit a tree on the side of the road. The witness described the vehicle as being all over the road prior to the crash.

While Bend Police responded, the witnessed advised that the suspect was speeding away from the scene, northbound. The truck was further described as a white Ford.  A few moments after advising the suspect was driving away, the witness advised the truck had hit another car.

OSP and Bend PD arrived a few moments later and discovered the truck had left its lane of travel and struck a southbound mini-van head on.  The crash was on the business 97 overpass, just south of the northbound Parkway on-ramp.

After the truck struck the mini-van, it continued northbound into the west guardrail, just narrowly missing a second vehicle.  Officers contacted the occupants of the minivan and the Ford Truck. They learned the mini-van had the 4 above listed occupants. The female driver was entrapped. Bend Fire had to extricate the driver and she was eventually transported to St. Charles via ambulance with serious injuries.  The other three occupants were transported to St. Charles via ambulance with minor injuries.

The driver of the Ford Truck and lone occupant was identified as Jose Aguirre Bernabe. He was transported to St. Charles via ambulance with minor injuries.  Aguirre Bernabe was determined to be under the influence and arrested on the below listed charges. Both directions of the Hwy were shut down with the assistance of ODOT for over an hour and a half. The investigation is ongoing and charges may change at a later date.

DUII, Assault II, Reckless driving, criminal mischief, Reckless endangering.
