On Wednesday, June 9th at 3:47 p.m. Officers from the City of Bend Police Department responded to a report of an armed male in the Walmart parking lot located at 20120 Pinebrook Blvd. within the City of Bend.

Two separate callers to Deschutes County 911 reported seeing a male armed with a handgun in the parking lot. One caller reported the male was running with the handgun through the parking lot. The caller reported the male pointed the handgun at a blue Subaru wagon. The driver of that Subaru got out and the male armed with the handgun got into the driver seat. The 911 caller reported at least one other person was reported to be in the vehicle with the male armed with the gun. The 911 callers continued to watch the vehicle as it prepared to exit the Walmart parking lot onto S. Hwy 97. The 911 callers described the vehicle to include providing its Oregon License plate to Deschutes County 911. This information was provided to the responding officers.

Officers from the City of Bend Police Department and Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office located the vehicle traveling north on S. Hwy 97 and conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle near the intersection of S. Hwy 97 and SE Badger Road. Due to the report of a handgun being displayed and the potential severity of the crimes Officers conducted a high risk or guns drawn traffic stop of the vehicle. Mutiple officers were involved in the traffic stop. Several police vehicles were used to block and divert traffic from southbound S. Hwy 97 in order to limit the risk of the public coming into the immediate area of the traffic stop. One of the 911 callers told an officer the handgun they observed was tan in color.

Officers recovered a tan in color BB gun style pistol from the vehicle. The BB gun pistol is the same size and appearance of a firearm. During interviews of the person armed with the BB gun, officers learned this male was “joking around” with his friends in the parking lot.

The tan BB gun was seized as evidence pending charging considerations from the Deschutes County District Attorney’s Office. The City of Bend Police Department would like anyone that witnessed the events in the Walmart parking lot to provide a statement by calling Deschutes County 911 dispatch at 541-693-6911.

Southbound traffic on S. Hwy 97 was diverted for approximately 30 minutes due to this investigation.

The Bend Police Department was assisted by the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office.
