Criminal Mischief arrest at 61530 South Highway 97 - 04/02/21

Incident: Criminal Mischief I

Case Number: 2021-00017701

Date and Time: April 2, 2021

Location: 61530 South Highway 97

Victim: Precision Auto Body; 61530 South Highway 97

Suspect: Don Alexander Xenos Putnam          46 year old              Bend resident

On April 2, 2021 at 3:26pm the Bend Police Department responded to the Central Oregon Irrigation District (COID) access road behind 61530 South Highway 97. Officers with the Bend Police Department have been working with an unhoused individual living in a tent on the access road since September of 2020. Bend Police coordinated several outreach contacts with Don Putnam alongside Deschutes County Health Service staff in an attempt to engage him in ongoing services and connect him to available community resources.

Early in the week, Putnam was contacted by officers and service providers. Putnam was offered numerous services and was given several days to leave the area. On March 31st, Putnam was asked to leave and he refused and stayed in his tent.

Today, Putnam was reported to be throwing rocks and causing damage to the building occupied by Precision Auto Body, 61530 South Highway 97. Employees at the business identified Putnam as the suspect and he was believed to be in his tent on the COID access road. Bend Police Officers applied for and received a warrant to arrest Putnam from the property owned by COID. Putnam was contacted inside of his tent and taken into custody without incident.

Putnam was transported to the Deschutes County Adult Jail, where he was lodged for Criminal Mischief I, related to the damage at Precision Auto Body.

Putnam’s personal property is being maintained by the COID for the next 30 days. COID will continue to clean up the area in question.
