On 12/1/2020 at approximately 1845 hours, a Bend Police Officer was parked in a patrol vehicle near the intersection of NE Hawthorne Avenue and NE 3rd Street. During this time, a gray Chrysler 300 passenger vehicle attempted to turn west on NE Hawthorne Avenue, nearly striking the occupied, parked police vehicle.
The Chrysler, driven by Corey Michael Helm, was travelling at a high rate of speed and drove off the roadway, through the parking lot of a business and then back onto the roadway. Helm then crashed the Chrysler into an unoccupied Nissan Pickup truck, parked on the side of the road.
Several officers responded to the scene, ordering Helm out of the Chrysler. Helm did not comply with officers’ orders and attempted to drive away, toward officers. Officers were able to pin Helm’s vehicle with a police patrol vehicle, preventing him from fleeing and potentially injuring pedestrians and motorists. Helm then surrendered to police custody.
Information gathered on scene indicated that Helm struck another vehicle on NE Irving Avenue, prior to crashing into the Nissan pickup. No one was injured during this incident. Helm was lodged at the Deschutes County Jail where he was booked for the listed charges.
