Case: 2020-121985

Date and Time: 11/8/20 at 9:39 pm

Location: Newport Market, 1121 NW Newport Avenue, Bend, Oregon

Arrested by citation: Paul Jonathon, 30 years old, Bend, Oregon

Victim: 33 year old male, Redmond, Oregon

Bend Police officers were dispatched to Newport Market for a call of a road rage incident where a weapon was displayed, on Sunday, November 8, 2020 at 9:39 pm.  The caller, a 33 year old male, was working as a street sweeper when he was following a vehicle on NW Newport Avenue near NW 9th Street. The driver of the vehicle was driving very slowly on NW Newport Avenue and then he slammed on his brakes in front of the street sweeper.

The driver of the vehicle then turned onto a side street.  The driver of the street sweeper continued his route to sweep the parking lot of Newport Market.  A short time later the same vehicle that was in front of the street sweeper arrived in the parking lot of Newport Market.  The male in that vehicle was later identified as Paul Jonathan.

Paul Jonathan yelled at the victim, the driver of the street sweeper, and the victim yelled back while in their vehicles, in the parking lot.  Paul Jonathan then pointed a handgun at the victim.  Paul Jonathan left the parking lot and the victim called law enforcement.

A Bend Police officer located the suspect vehicle in the parking lot of Aspen Court Apartments.  There were no occupants inside the vehicle, however a handgun was seen inside of the vehicle.  Paul Jonathan was located in the parking lot and he was taken into custody without incident.

It was determined that the handgun was a black metal airsoft gun which appeared very similar to a 1911 style handgun.

Paul Jonathan was not lodged at the Deschutes County Adult Jail due to the restricted admission policy due to COVID.

Paul Jonathan was issued a citation for the crime of Menacing.

The Bend Police were assisted by the Deschutes County Sheriff's Office and the Oregon State Police.
