Upon investigation, the cause of the commercial structure fire at 225 NE Lafayette Avenue was determined to be spontaneous combustion of oily rags from a staining project that had been placed into a storage mezzanine just below the roof. Losses are estimated at $50,000 to the structure and $60,000 for the contents.
Oil-based paints, stains, and varnishes are commonly used for residential & commercial projects, but they can start a fire if not handled and disposed of properly. The oils in these products release heat as they dry, and if that heat remains trapped within material in cloths or rags, it can reach ignition temperature. Bend Fire & Rescue would like to remind the community to always put oil-soaked rags in a metal container, fill it with water, and close the lid. Contact your local garbage and recycling company for information on proper disposal of the containers.

Shortly after 6:30 pm this evening, Bend Fire & Rescue was dispatched to a reported commercial structure fire with flames through the roof in the area of NE 2nd Street and NE Lafayette Avenue. First arriving apparatus confirmed a working fire at Bowen Sports Performance. The fire was knocked down quickly by Bend Fire units, who remained on scene for approximately 2-½ hours ensuring the fire was completely extinguished.
Two other buildings were located immediately next to the fire building, but the concrete masonry construction coupled with high parapet walls above the roofline ensured that the two adjacent businesses had no fire or smoke damage. Bowen Sports Performance did receive substantial damage to the roof/interior structure and contents. A damage estimate has yet to be determined.
The fire is under investigation at this time, more information will be released on completion of the investigation.
