Armed Barricaded Suspect Taken Into Custody In Monroe - 09/09/26

MONROE, Ore. – Benton County Sheriff’s Office deputies took a 42-year-old man into custody Wednesday morning following an armed barricade incident that prompted nearby evacuations, a shelter-in-place notification, and school lockouts.

 

At approximately 7:30 a.m., deputies responded to the 700 block of Commercial Street in Monroe after receiving a 9-1-1 call from a resident who reported that James Nathan Brown, of Halsey, had fired a gun inside a home and barricaded himself inside with the caller.

 

The uninjured family member was able to safely escape the residence a short time later.

 

As a precaution, dispatch notified Monroe Elementary School and Monroe High School. Both schools entered lockout status, typically meaning exterior doors were secured and access was restricted while normal activities continued inside. Deputies also evacuated residents within approximately one block of the residence while they worked to safely resolve the incident.

 

Deputies attempted to talk to Brown; he would not engage in conversation with them. Distractionary tactics were used in attempts to engage in conversation, but again, Brown refused to engage in any communication. Eventually, Brown exited the home, but did not comply with directions from the deputies so less lethal devices were used to take Brown into custody at 11:00 a.m.

 

Lockouts and evacuations were lifted at approximately 11:15 a.m.

 

Medics transported Brown to Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center in Corvallis for evaluation of minor injuries.

 

Brown was taken into custody on Linn and Lane County felony warrants and charged in Benton County with Criminal Mischief II, Menacing, Disorderly Conduct II and Recklessly Endangering Another.

 

The Benton County Sheriff’s Office thanks the Corvallis Police Department, Corvallis Regional Communications Center, Corvallis Fire Department, Monroe Fire, and Benton County Mental Health for their assistance during the incident.
