CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Benton County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Services Division encourages you to exercise a heightened alert for the threat of wildfire by taking steps to ensure you are ready for a wildfire emergency. Residents of Benton County should understand and prepare for evacuation levels before there is an active threat; Be Ready, Be Set, and Go Now!
Please protect yourself, your family, and your property from a devastating wildfire by taking the time to learn the levels of evacuations for Oregon wildfires,” stated Benton County Emergency Manager Bryan Lee. “Benton County utilizes the ‘Be Ready, Be Set, Go Now’ model for evacuations. These are used to relay critical information to the community about an impending risk to their safety.”
LEVEL 1: A Level 1 Evacuation means, “BE READY” for potential evacuation. Residents should be aware of the danger that exists in their area and monitor telephone devices and local media sources for emergency alerts. This is the time for preparation and precautionary movement of persons with special needs, mobile property, pets, and livestock. If conditions worsen, public safety will issue an upgrade to a level 2 or 3 for this area.
LEVEL 2: A Level 2 Evacuation means, “BE SET” to evacuate. You must prepare to leave at a moment’s notice. This level indicates there is significant danger in your area, and residents should either voluntarily evacuate now to a shelter or a family/friend’s home outside of the affected area. If choosing to remain, residents need to be ready to evacuate at a moment’s notice. Residents MAY have time to gather necessary items but doing so is at their own risk. This may be the only notice you receive. Continue to monitor your telephone devices, local media sources, and county website to receive further information. If conditions worsen, public safety will issue an upgrade to level 3 for this area and will make every attempt to return to this location with the new upgrade notice.
LEVEL 3: A Level 3 Evacuation means, “GO NOW” Leave immediately! Danger in your area is current or imminent, and you should evacuate immediately. If you choose to ignore this notice, you must understand that public safety officials may not be available to assist you further. DO NOT delay leaving to gather any belongings or make efforts to protect your home.
When an evacuation notice is issued for a wildfire, take prompt action to maximize survival chances. Plan several escape routes away from your home, by car, and on foot, keeping in mind those with special needs might need to evacuate long before a fire reaches your community.
