News Release
Hotter Days are Coming - 07/10/18

It's time to stay cool, stay hydrated, and stay informed.

Thursday's forecast has temperatures hitting 98 degrees.   If you are outside, avoid direct sunlight; wear lightweight, light-colored clothing; and use hats to protect your face and neck.  If you feel you are getting too hot, take a cool shower or bath.  If you know someone that might be vulnerable to high temperatures, check on them twice a day.

People should also drink more water than usual and avoid alcohol.  Don’t wait until you are thirsty to drink.  You are likely already dehydrated if you are thirsty.  Remind those around you also to drink enough water.

The symptoms of heat exhaustion are heavy sweating; weakness; cold/pale/clammy skin; a fast and weak pulse; and fainting.  With the more extreme heat stroke, you’ll have hot, red, dry or moist skin and a rapid and strong pulse.  Heat stroke can also lead to unconsciousness.

Those at most risk for a heat-related illness are people age 65 and older; people with chronic medical conditions; infants and children; athletes; people who work outdoors; and those without air conditioning.

If your home does not have air conditioning, consider spending time at Albany Public Library, Albany Senior Center, Heritage Mall and other places with air conditioning.

We cannot stress this enough: don’t over-exert yourself during extreme hot weather. Stay inside or find a place to be that has air conditioning. If you plan to head toward the river to cool off, please remember that you can visit any of the Albany Fire stations and borrow life jackets provided by the Albany Firefighters Community Assistance Fund.
